Winterfold Primary School students find it’s in their nature to play on new facility

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

WHERE there was once just a patch of land, Winterfold Primary School now has a brand new nature playground.

A school project from beginning to end, the school P&C saw a need for more active outdoor options for their students and set to work providing just that, from designing the layout to fundraising and applying for grants and working alongside the builder.

Using the contours of the land as well as recycled and natural materials, the new play area includes climbing features, a slide and balancing ropes and stones.

Winterfold Nature Play team member Karen Sanders said the playground had been a community effort and they were very happy with the result.

“Play options for the children had included hard surfaces, standard play equipment, and two large oval spaces and we believed it would be really good for our kids to have play options that reflect the natural environment here at our school,” she said.

“The kids have absolutely loved the area and take every opportunity to play on it.

“Students have stated that the play area is too busy as it is overrun with students at recess and lunchtime – we couldn’t ask for a more positive response.

“We are hoping to raise additional funds to create another smaller play space featuring water based activities, and giving the younger children an area where they lead on the play options.”
