SPEARWOOD resident Lewis Abdullah has been named Western Australia’s 2013 Young Person of the Year.

Lewis was presented with the award by Youth Minister Tony Simpson at a gala event on April 13.

Earlier that night, Lewis also bagged the Motivate! award.

The 19-year-old was nominated for his inspiring work with the Halo Leadership Development Agency, where he rose quickly through the ranks to become lead facilitator, coaching young people for success at the Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

He also holds the record for being the youngest person ever to lead a rehabilitation program in the Corrective Services detention system.

‘I couldn’t believe it,’ Lewis said. ‘It was overwhelming.’

True to his nature, Lewis was already looking ahead.

‘I will continue to work with Halo because there is a lot of work to be done,’ he said.

‘I want to give these guys the guidance they need to achieve their goals.’
