Case destroyed

Janice TeoFremantle Gazette

THE Senate’s report on the Perth Freight Link highlights the disastrous nature of this project, not just for Cottesloe but all Australians.

It is no surprise that Coalition senators did not dissent in findings that the Link is the wrong project in which to invest; that it will exceed $1.9 billion and it is a major lost opportunity for WA.

The Senate report absolutely destroys the case for the Link.

If the reports of experts such as Professor Peter Newman were not enough together with the voices of more than 30 independent lobby groups and organisations, surely the Senate report is.

Mr Turnbull, like his predecessor, won’t back a rail option.

The Link is short-sighted and a massive waste of Australian taxpayer money.

The Link should be condemned in the strongest terms possible.

Readers should note that the Senate report recommended that the Commonwealth withdraw its support for the Link; the Federal Government work with the State Government to develop future projects that will best meet the long-term infrastructure needs of Western Australia and rail and traffic management strategies be identified to expedite freight movement to the Fremantle port.

Notwithstanding what I have set out, Cottesloe council chose not to oppose the Link.
