Residents opposed to $1 million of their rates going towards concrete on a much-loved park are not against the skaters, but against the council for a shocking lack of due process.
A resident has received a letter from the council stating that the Esplanade was chosen after community consultation and as part of the Youth Plan process.
Firstly, the community has never been allowed to comment on the location of the skate plaza.
Secondly, the 2009 Masterplan specifically excluded any skate facility from the park, but did instruct the officers to draw up plans for a possible skate facility in the adjacent car park (that was never done).
Thirdly, if council reads its own Youth Plan it will see that it instructs council to ‘develop a plan to improve the Beach Street skate park and develop it into a space for young people’.
