Matter of rights

If we talk about asylum seekers as innocent people fleeing torture by dictators, fleeing persecution from tyrants or seeking safety after decades of displacement by war or occupation then the public would respond compassion.

My hunch is that if the boat arrivals were Caucasian and Christian the Government would not, for example, be contemplating putting them on Nauru and Manus Island as indefinite detainees or have them die at sea as many asylum seekers have done in the past few years.
