Never told of the dangers of asbestos

Asbestos is the problem that will not go away.
Asbestos is the problem that will not go away.

THERE has been a lot of talk recently about asbestos in the new hospital and how dangerous it is.

Well, about 50 years ago most of us had wooden palings for fences, but then a new fence came on the market and we were all encouraged to use it because it looked good, was maintenance-free, gave privacy, was strong, durable and would last a lifetime.

Many homes used this wonderful new fence called “asbestos”. We were never told of the dangers so most of the homes of that time had them installed.

Our fence is more than 40 years old now and showing signs of age. What will happen in the future when the fences will need to be replaced?

Will we have to pay a special company to come and remove, wrap and dispose of the fences, and because there are so many fences in the metropolitan area, where would they be buried?

That would cost a small fortune and I can see neighbours arguing about having it done because of the cost. Is there anyone in authority that has ever considered this problem because we are surrounded with asbestos in the older suburbs?
