Academics traded for athletics at School Sports WA athletics carnival

John Curtin College of the Arts hit the track in the Division B competition, beating out eight others to be named the champion school.

Giveney How was awarded the Year 11 girl individual champion, while Sasha Zhoya took out the Year 8 boys champion after winning event after event, coming first in the long jump, discus, 90m hurdles, 200m sprint, triple jump, high jump and 100m sprint and finishing fourth in shot-put.

Schoolmates Denaudo Murray, Sarah Legg, Georga Raath and Damian Saval finished third in the Year 10 boys, Year 7 girls, Year 8 girls and Year 7 boys champion tallies respectively.

Competing in Division D, Lakeland Senior High School’s Neil Robinson was named Year 9 boys champion, while Shanice Parker was leagues above the rest competition, taking out the champion Year 12 girl honour after coming first in the triple jump, 100m hurdles, 200m sprint, 400m and long jump and second in the 100m sprint.

Classmates Hannah Barkell and Alex King came third and fourth in the same category, while Tamyjah Tuhakaraina and Courtney Hodder finished third in the Year 7 girls and Year 9 girls categories respectively.

In the same division, Atwell College’s Jake Penny was Year 11 boys individual champion and Madison Copeland the Year 8 girls champion.

Fellow Atwell students Nathan Garbutt and Jayden Kahotea tied for second place in the Year 10 boys champion honours.

With South Fremantle Senior High School competing in Division E, Grace Mercer finished second in the Year 10 girls champion tally while schoolmate Jacob Pitt finished second in the Year 8 boys.

Also competing in Division E was Hamilton Senior High School, Abdul Kamara taking third in the Year 12 boys and Ella Ward third in the Year 8 girls individual champion categories.
