Cricket: Fremantle handed first two-day loss of season

FREMANTLE has been handed their first two-day loss of the WA Premier Cricket season.

After setting their opponents 161 to win, Fremantle’s attack had South Perth at 3-73 at stumps on day one.

South Perth’s middle order rallied on day two and despite efforts from Fremantle’s potent attack, they pushed through the target and on to 9-228 and the win.

Fremantle’s Josh Chojnowski was the pick of the bowlers with 3-57, while Chris Davenport ably supported with 2-23.

The loss sees Fremantle slip from second to fourth on the ladder.

The competition will break for Christmas, with Fremantle to resume on January 5 with a one-day match against Perth at Stevens Reserve.

In the South Metropolitan Cricket Association competition, two local teams recorded wins in the round 7 one-day action.

Hilton Palmyra won the toss and elected to bat first in their match against Phoenix, setting a total of 115 for their bowlers to defend.

Despite a hard-fought half century to opener Lance Hinds (50 runs), no other Hilton Palmyra batsman made it passed a score of 12.

Ben McGilvray was the most effective bowler for Phoenix, taking 4-39, while Jacob Johnson also proved menacing with the ball with his numbers of 2-7.

The score of 115 was almost enough for Hilton Palmyra, as Phoenix lost wickets regularly during their innings, but a 44-run effort from Johnson at the top of the order helped his team to a victorious 120.

Hilton Palmyra’s Harry Grigson took 4-21, while Angus Andrew (2-19) and Jason Broadbridge (2-4) proved able support.

Cockburn also recorded a win in their match against the SJ Blues.

The Blues batted first and set a strong total of 5-169 in their 40 overs, with Cockburn’s Alec Radonich taking two wickets.

Cockburn’s batters made light work of the total, making 6-184 in a little over 38 overs with the help of a huge 88-run knock from Adam O’Neill.

East Fremantle suffered a defeat at the hands of CBC.

CBC won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision that paid dividends when they made 9-167 in their 40 overs.

East Fremantle’s Nick Siave toiled hard with the ball, taking 3-29.

East Fremantle opener Ben Mustard made a dent in the total early with his 55 runs, but a collapse, which saw no other batsman make more than 17 runs, saw the team knocked over 12 runs short of the win.

The one day games continue on December 15, with Phoenix hosting Leeming Spartan, Hilton Palmyra taking on Bicton Attadale and Cockburn doing battle with East Fremantle.
