Cricket: Fremantle on a knifes edge in round 8

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

ROUND 8 of the WA Premier Cricket competition is on a knife’s edge for Fremantle after a middle order collapse on day 1.

South Perth sent the visitors into bat first and sent Fremantle opener Matthew Micale back to the rooms almost immediately with an LBW decision.

Wickets continued to fall steadily but, despite some resistance from Anthony Collova (23 runs) and Ashton Turner (35), a collapse through the middle order saw Fremantle fall for 160.

Fremantle started the bowling strongly by taking three quick wickets to have South Perth at 3-17, but Braydon Meuleman (43 not out) and Darius D’Silva (25 not out) rallied to have the home side 3-73 at stumps.

Josh Chojnowski took two wickets for Fremantle, while Tim Miles snared one.

Day two will continue from 11.40am on December 8 at Richardson Park, South Perth.

In the South Metropolitan Cricket Association competition, teams returned to the one-day format for round 6.

East Fremantle’s skills with the bat helped them record a win over Hilton Palmyra.

East Fremantle’s Luke Strnadica fell one run short of record a half century as he led his team to 5-188 at the end of their 40 overs.

Hilton Palmyra’s Angus Andrew and Liam O’Donnell shared the scalps, taking two wickets apiece.

Hilton Palmyra started the chase strongly, making their way to 48 before losing their first wicket, but they ran out of balls to hunt down the big total as they fell just short at 9-165.

Opener Chayce Gillett top scored with 32 runs, while East Fremantle’s Carl Graham was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-44.

Cockburn also recorded a win against Bicton Attadale.

Sent into bat first, Cockburn’s Joshua Pescud (54) and Damian Carroll (47) steadied the ship after a shaky start to help the team reach 7-186.

Bicton Attadale’s middle order tried to rally in response, but they only reached 148 before running out of batsmen.

Cockburn’s Alec Radonich did most of the damage with the ball, taking 5-23.

Phoenix were unable to chase down a total of 6-178 set by their opponents CBC.

A Ronson Babu 35 was not enough to help Phoenix over the line as they fell for just 103.

Round 7 of the SMCA will run from 1pm December 8 with Phoenix taking on Hilton Palmyra, Cockburn hosting SJ Blues and East Fremantle playing CBC.
