Sydney Swans player and 2014 Australian of the Year Adam Goodes stirred controversy after performing an on-field war dance after he kicked a goal against Carlton on Friday night.

Goodes maintains the animated celebration was not directed at Carlton fans or a response to boos from the crowd, but simply a tribute to the junior Aboriginal players who had taught him the dance.

Johnson on Tuesday threw his support behind the Sydney legend.

"I just thought it was a proud moment for himself, indigenous players and indigenous communities," he said.

"Credit to him, he's standing tall and he's proud to be indigenous " Ill back him.

"He's a quality person and a leader in our community and the playing group.

"He's free to do whatever he wants and it was the round to do it."

Johnson plays his 200th game tonight against Richmond at Subiaco Oval.
