WHILE most AFL players dread long flights across the country for matches, rising Fremantle star Lachie Weller has a different opinion.

Fremantle’s first pick in the 2014 national draft was recruited from Queensland club Southport.

He moved to the sunshine state from Tasmania when he was just a teenager.

Older brother Mav is currently plying his trade with St Kilda in Melbourne after three years with the Gold Coast Suns, so his ties to the eastern states are strong.

Travelling interstate regularly has helped him keep in touch with family and friends.

“It’s been good this year (because) you travel every second week so I see my parents a lot, they’re in Melbourne now,” he said.

On Monday, Weller (20) became the second Docker in as many weeks to receive an AFL NAB Rising Star nomination following 22 disposals and four goals in Fremantle’s 83-point win over Brisbane.

He has played every game this season.
