Fremantle PCYC gymnast Jaynie Kinnell prepares for national stage

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

A NATIONAL competition is a big stage for any sportsperson, let alone one who is just 11 years old.

Fremantle PCYC gymnast Jaynie Kinnell will get to compete on the big stage after qualifying for the Gymnastics WA team that is heading to Melbourne for this month’s Australian Gymnastics Championships.

Fremantle PCYC gym sports co-ordinator Fiona Hearne said Jaynie had been selected for the Women’s Artistic National Level 7 team, the second youngest gymnast to be chosen for this level and the first PCYC gymnast in more than 20 years to qualify for the state team.

“I recognised very early that she had a special talent and she competed in the Fremantle PCYC Singapore Team in 2012 as a six-year-old,” she said.

“After placing second All Around in Singapore in November last year, she set herself the goal of making the state team this year and she has worked hard to achieve this.

“I am very proud of Jaynie and her determination to achieve her goals, and I look forward to seeing her compete in Melbourne.”

Jaynie has had strong preparation for the national competition, finishing sixth in her age group in the first qualifier event and then equal first in the second.

During the qualifiers, she took out the vault competition and came second on beam.

The 2017 Australian Gymnastics Championships are on from May 22 to June 4.
