FOUR local hockey players will represent the state in the upcoming Under-21 National Championships.
Fremantle Hockey Club member and Coolbellup resident Matt Bird has been selected to the men’s side along with Fremantle’s James Collins and Harry Golding and East Fremantle’s Bryn de Bes.
HockeyWA high performance manager Jason Butcher said both state teams would be looking to improve on last year’s effort where the women finished second and the men fourth.
“We always planned to select a squad so that we could spend more time with the broader group,” he said.
“After last year’s performance it’s critical we challenge all aspects of the program and ensure that the identified issues from last year don’t survive-selection is a key starting point.
“The first phase of the program will be focused on resetting standards and really challenging the group around who understands and has the capacity to deliver on those expectations.
“This process will ensure the right 18 travel to Wollongong.”
The Under-21 National Championships is in Wollongong in July.
