It’s lonely at the top

SIXTY years after the first person swam from North Fremantle to Rottnest, hundreds took to Leighton Beach to attempt the swim themselves in last weekend’s inaugural Port to Pub meet.

Among the 700 swimmers who took part was South Perth’s Sian Williams, who won the 20km solo category in a little under four hours and 58 minutes, beating the next best swimmer by 18 minutes.

She said she felt a bit lonely swimming by herself for most of the race. “I was nervous about the unexpected and how my body would pull up,” she said. “I only seriously started training six weeks ago.”
