Substitute Kyah Simon’s 80th minute strike proved the difference with Australia holding on against a side that had not conceded a goal in its opening three matches.
The key play came after Australia won a battle for the ball in midfield.
A slicing pass released Western Australian Lisa De Vanna whose curling attempt was parried by Brazilian keeper Luciano into the path of Simon to burry home.
Australia will play the winner of Tuesday’s clash between Japan and the Netherlands for a place in the final four.
