A NEW competition was introduced to the Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club’s ceremony to remember the crew of the HMAS Sydney II.

Held at Leighton Beach recently, the ceremony honours the 645 crew members who lost their lives in the 1941 battle with a German raider.

For the first time, the club held the invitational Sydney Reel Race, with teams from Sorrento and City of Perth Surf Life Saving Clubs invited to take part against Fremantle crews.

Sorrento won the male competition, while City of Perth won the female event, each netting their club $500 in prize money.

Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club’s Matt Elliott said they would love to raise the profile of older-style events.

“It was great to see our juniors eagerly watching an event that is as old as the surf lifesaving movement itself,” he said.
