Re-live magic of 1985

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

Having lost the 1984 grand final to Swan Districts by 36 points, 1985 was the year the Sharks were out for blood.

Their opening game of the season was a rematch against the premiers, East Fremantle repaying them for the grand final defeat with a 79 point thumping.

The Sharks won their first 11 games of the season before their first defeat at the hands of West Perth by just two points, but by then punters had tipped them to make it back to the big dance in September.

They would lose just three times more for the season to finish on top of the ladder with a 17-4 record heading into the finals.

East Fremantle came up against Subiaco in the second semi-final, beating the Lions 125-113 in a high scoring match to cement their spot in the grand final.

Up against Subiaco again in a wet grand final after the Lions accounted for Swan Districts in the preliminary final, the Sharks got their premiership, running out five point winners with Clinton Browning kicking six.

Club historian Maureen Gathercole said in the final minutes, the players were screaming for the siren to sound and were "scrambling like mad and absolutely exhausted".

Ron Alexander, the captain of the 1985 side and current number one ticket holder, said his highlight of season 1985 was kicking 14.6 in a quarter, and the grand final win.

East Fremantle Football Club will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1985 premiership with a reunion on August 8 before their match against West Perth.
