Rio Olympics: Fremantle sailer Carrie Smith’s medal chances gone

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

FREMANTLE sailor Carrie Smith’s hopes for an Olympic medal have been dashed in the last three races of the 470 Women competition.

Sitting in 11th overall leading into the final three races overnight, Fremantle Sailing Club’s Smith and her partner Jaime Ryan finished in 15th, 17th and 12th to drop down to 15th overall in a field of 20.

A top three finish and a chance to stand on the podium is impossible, with Great Britain having already securing the gold and the six countries fighting for silver and bronze too far ahead for the Australian pair to chase down with only the medal race to go tonight just after midnight.
