Sydney race yields seven

At the recent Australian Laser National Championships held in Sydney, Fremantle Sailing Club members brought home a huge haul of seven championship titles.

Rome Featherstone took out the Laser 4.7 Open and Youth title after leading the field for the whole regatta, despite having only taking to the dinghy last year.

Fellow Fremantle sailors Hayden Coote took our the Laser 4.7 Junior competition and Hailey Johnson the Laser 4.7 Female division.

Also dubbed champions were Conor Nicholas in the Laser Radial, Manami Doi in the Laser Radial Female and Zoe Thompson in the Laser Radial Female Youth, while Lachy Gilham won the Laser Standard Youth championship.

Fremantle Sailing Club members also had five second place and three third place finishes.

Competing at the same time were some Fremantle Sailing Club’s youngest members in the Youth Sailing World Championships in Malaysia.

The local sailors did well in a strong international field, with Alistair Young bringing home gold in the boy’s Laser Radial and Nia Jerwood and Lisa Smith adding silver from their 420 competition.

Alistair said gold was the ultimate goal for him.

“The youth worlds is a totally different regatta to anything else that you can do and having one under the belt, the experience has helped me heaps,” he said.

“The plan is to move into the Laser Standard next and see how that goes.

“The big end goal is the Olympic games and a gold medal.
