North Freo student makes state team for cross country running

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

The North Fremantle Primary School student has been a runner since he could walk, and despite having no formal training, has made the 10-year-old School Sports WA Cross Country team.

With both of his parents sharing a love of running, there is little wonder Tane followed suit, but mother Shani said her son thrived off longer distances.

“He’s been doing it for years, since he was about five or six and used to do fun runs with us but he’s too fast for us now,” she said.

“He likes anything long distance, for him even the cross country is too short a distance.

“He’s wanted to do more than 6km but I wouldn’t let him until the 10km Bridges Fun Run earlier this year, where he won the U16s category.”

Ms Hasler said Tane was as motivated as anyone to run and usually trained himself, but she said he remained unfazed when he made the State team, which goes to Melbourne in August.

“He keeps saying, ‘Mum, can you stop telling people’,” she said. “He doesn’t really know what all the fuss is about.”
