THERE is plenty of local sporting action around Fremantle and Cockburn this weekend.

Basketball (SBL)

Both the Lakeside Lightning and Cockburn Cougars will be looking to avoid becoming April Fools when they take on Perry Lake Hawks and Stirling Senators respectively tonight.

With both the Cougar men and women preparing for a double-header this weekend, the men will be looking to cement their position in the top three with a win against the Senators at home tonight before heading south to take on the Rockingham Flames tomorrow night.

Facing a similar task, the women will be hoping import Cherridy Thornton can continue her dominant start to the season and help lead them to a double win.

After notching up their first win of the season last week, the Lightning women will be looking to go back-to-back in a tough match-up against the third placed Hawks.

The men will also be looking for win number two and a surge up the ladder from 11th place, with import Daniel Alexander gearing up for another dominant performance having already scored 74 points at an average of 24.7 in the team’s first three games.

Cockburn Cougars (Wally Hagan Stadium, Hamilton Hill) and Lakeside Lightning (Lakeside Recreation Centre, North Lake) both have tip offs tonight at 6.30pm for the women and 8.30pm for the men.

Football (WAFL)

Surprise ladder leaders South Fremantle will be eager to continue their unbeaten start to the season against East Perth tonight.

Unbelievably, the Bulldogs sit atop the League and Colts ladders, and are second on percentage in the Reserves, with all three teams experiencing an unbeaten start to the season.

East Fremantle has a bye.

South Fremantle takes on East Perth tonight at Fremantle Oval, league bounce down at 7.30pm.

Soccer (NPL WA)

Netting one win and a draw from their first two matches, Cockburn City Football Club are preparing for a tough home game against defending champions Bayswater City tomorrow night.

With Bayswater’s Gustavo Giron Marulanda currently leading the league for goals scored with six, the Cockburn defenders will have their work cut out for them trying to keep him, and his teammates, from finding the back of the net.

Cockburn play Bayswater at Dalmatinac Park, Spearwood tomorrow, with kick off at 3pm.
