Lewis Collier and Alessandro de Andrade Basto, two Year 8 students from Emmanuel Catholic College, were members of a squad made up of representatives from WA and Victoria in the under-13 age group.

After performing well in the group stage the team won a tight penalty shootout against Venezuela in the semi final before romping home in the championship match 5-1 over the USA.

Alessandro said he was relieved to win the championship.

It was really exciting as all our hard work had paid off, he said.

Lewis said he had gained a lot from the win.

This was my first experience at this level of futsal and I learned so much each time we played another team, he said. Our team was only formed six months ago, but we have worked hard to gel together.

Fremantle Muita Calma and JSFL5 (U10s), two other teams training at the WA State Futsal Centre in Bibra Lake, also claimed championships.

Lewis and Alex received financial assistance from the City of Cockburn for this trip.
