Young guns take on best

Matt Bird and Declan Spencer were chosen in the 18-man squad that will take on the best up-and-comers in field hockey on the national stage.

Fremantle Hockey Club mens vice-president Matt Allan said they congratulated the two players on making the team, with team-mate Ben Di Sabato unlucky after having a great season.

Were extremely proud of the development opportunities we can offer to young aspiring players at Fremantle Hockey Club, he said.

The selection of Matt and Declan in the WA U21 squad is testament both to that and the dedication and talent displayed by both.

The squad looks the strongest it has done for many years and to be included is a huge recognition.

The mens U21 national championships will be played in Canberra from July 12 to 19.

The selection news capped off a big week for the club, after it received a Good Sports program Level 1 accreditation.

The program is run through the Australian Drug Foundation and aims to make community sport clubs safer and healthier by weakening the link between alcohol and sport.

Other local Good Sport clubs include the Fremantle Districts Cricket Club, Breakers Netball Club, East Fremantle Lacrosse Club and the Fremantle Rowing Club.
