A THIRD generation family business in Midland has been celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Midland Smash Repairs owner Paul Smith the business was originally set up next to the old Midland steam train station as a small panel beater shop.

“In 1965, my dad, Daniel Smith, bought the shop and named it Midland Smash Repairs,” he said.

“Since I can remember, I’ve been at my dad’s workshop.

“I’ve got fond memories of playing out the back of the shop in all the old car wrecks with my sister.

“I then officially came to work as a panel beater with my dad when I was 21.

“Now, Midland Smash Repairs has 18 staff, most of which are my family, including my children and brother-in-law.

“Even my 75-year old mum works here, helping us out with the books.

“The plan is to continue keeping the business in the family.

“My 25-year-old son Lachlan basically runs the shop. He will be in charge one day.”

The business has been a repair partner of RAC Insurance, which has been celebrating its 110th anniversary.

“We average about 1500 repair jobs from RAC every year,” Mr Smith said.
