Councillors unanimously agreed to set precise boundaries once they endorsed the Amberton foreshore management plan.

Cr Sabine Winton said the City was taking a proactive step to allocate where future dog beaches would be, and forewarn people moving into the area.

‘It allows those residents to know upfront what is going to be there,’ she said.

Cr Winton said half of people loved dog beaches and half did not. The council report said the foreshore management plan for the northern portion of the Shorehaven development had been approved, but one for the neighbouring Amberton estate had not yet been submitted.

‘The exact location and length of the dog beach can only be determined when the City has received and endorsed the foreshore management plans (FMP) for the adjacent land,’ it said.

‘Emerge Associates is completing the Amberton FMP on behalf of Stockland and has indicated that a draft FMP will be submitted in the near future. Timing of the north Alkimos dog beach is subject to the construction of supporting infrastructure, in particular the adjoining roads, car parks and beach access ways.

‘Access to the proposed dog beach should only be permitted once council resolves to create a dog beach at the approved location.’

Councillors agreed to advise the Alkimos Progress Association and Amberton Residents Association of its intention to create the dog beach.
