Vinnies seeking volunteers for annual Street Appeal

Sally McGlewCommunity News

THE St Vincent de Paul Society‘s annual Street Appeal is being held on Friday September 9, and are looking for volunteers willing to help out collecting in the Perth CBD.

St Vincent de Paul chief executive Mark Fitzpatrick said funds raised from the Street Appeal go towards helping the Society continue its work in providing emergency relief and support to families and individuals in WA.

“The Society responds to the welfare needs in the community by providing food, clothing, household items and financial assistance with things such as utility bills and rent,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

“The annual Street Appeal is an important funding source for the Society’s emergency relief program so anyone interested in helping collection the day will make a real difference.”

In July alone the St Vincent de Paul Society provided emergency relief to about 3000 individuals in the Perth metropolitan area, with more people also being assisted in regional areas.

“We continue to see increasing numbers of people coming to us for assistance with the majority of requests being food followed by help with utility bills,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

“We have over 1100 members across WA that go out into the community every day to help people who are doing it tough,” he said.

The Appeal will be running from 7am – 6pm in the Perth CBD on Friday 9 September 2014.
