JACK Comerford is retiring from Parmelia Hilton Perth after 37 years.

The 69-year-old recalls his first day of work on November 23, 1981 when the long list events took up two walls.

Mr Comerford got the job through his wife Pam who worked for an airline, which was having an event at the venue.

“I came in as the assistant to the banquet head waiter and on the second day I was the head waiter,” he said.

Less than a year later, Mr Comerford moved overseas with the hotel brand spending time in Ireland and England before returning to Perth.

He leaves the company as the Senior Events Sales Executive.

An event that sticks in his mind was the OTC Conference in 1982, a telecommunications event for the organisation now known as Telstra.

“They were showing us the satellite and saying that one day people would have mobile phones,” Mr Comerford said.

While the Kallaroo resident said he would miss interacting with clients and staff, he was looking forward to travelling more regularly with his wife, spending time with his four grandchildren and playing golf two or three times a week.
