The gym, which cost more than $750,000 to equip, includes a crossfit multi-station, 19 touch screen treadmills, two Jacob’s Ladder climbing machines, Cybex arc trainers and two group fitness rooms.
A new entrance, reception, cafe, retail shop, lift, admin offices, toilet and change area were also included in the redevelopment.
Leisure Centre manager Dale Morrissy said about 3500 people were expected to be members of the centre over the next two to three years, with 2000 people already on the membership list.
City of Vincent Mayor Alannah MacTiernan said the demographics of the area had sparked the need for the redevelopment, which started in 2011.
‘This redevelopment gives the centre a new lease of life and will provide huge recreation opportunities,’ she said.
The new gym was the final stage of the centre’s redevelopment, which included an upgrade of the 50m outdoor pool, installing a 30m outdoor activities pool, a learn-to-swim outdoor pool and sustainability features. Carpark works are expected to be finished in the next few months.
