The young designer will travel to Japan as part of WA’s sister-state relationship with Hyogo Prefecture, a program now in its fourth year.

‘I was overwhelmed when I found out ” it’s nice to know that my work is appreciated in a different area,’ Ms Topham said.

Premier Colin Barnett said the program enabled emerging designers to learn about fabric design in one of the world’s most prestigious textile centres.

‘The program fosters collaboration between WA’s growing fashion industry and Hyogo’s respected Banshu textile manufacturers,’ he said.

Ms Topham has been studying design at ECU for the past two years and exhibited at the Perth Fashion Festival.

‘I picked fashion to study because I’m interested in the way design can interact with the body,’ she said.

Her ultimate goal is to own a fashion label, and she sees the scholarship as a great way to kick off her career.

‘It’s exciting to have something to look forward to after graduating,’ she said.

‘It’s definitely a good start.’
