Jon BassettEastern Reporter

AN alleged carjacker attacked a 64-year-old Claremont woman in her VW Polo during a crime spree on Moore Street, Perth about 7.50pm last Monday.

“The Polo’s doors were unlocked, and it will be alleged he dragged her out by her hair,” Senior Sergeant Brad Richards-Scully told Community News this morning.

Sgt Richards-Scully said the woman was very shaken by the attack, but received only minor injuries.

Her alleged attacker started his alleged string of crimes by trying to steal a motorcycle in a nearby carpark on Moore Street.

Sgt Richards-Scully said only the machine’s lock was damaged, before sunglasses and other small valuables were taken from another motorcycle in the carpark.

The alleged carjacker then made his first attempt at taking a car.

“He’s gone into Moore Street and tried to get in to a car, but its driver was inside while he’s was banging on the window a few times,” Sgt Richards-Scully said.

The man then moved up the street to allegedly target and steal the woman’s VW, before police including detectives moved into the area after reports of crimes.

The VW was found in Balcatta about 8.30pm that day, before investigations led police to a Balga address where a Balga man (28) was arrested a short time later.

He was charged with aggravated robbery, stealing and attempt to steal motor vehicles and alleged crimes not directly related to the carjacking including breach of a violence restraining order.

He was remanded in custody to reappear in Perth Magistrates Court today.
