Art centre target of young vandals

Caitlin TillerEastern Reporter

Police said vandals climbed on the roof and knocked down two airconditioning units and two fans earlier this month.

The Department of Culture (DCA) and the Arts Director-General Duncan Ord said members of the public had seen youths on the roof of the building.

Mr Ord said the Department had considered hiring security guards.

"The DCA has a duty of care and a responsibility to ensure a safe environment at all times for tenants, suppliers and visitors to the building, who include children," Mr Ord said.

Three weeks ago, sprinklers were allegedly turned on to deter people from loitering and sleeping in the area adjacent to the building.

Mr Ord said the number of people in the area had increased since the department shut down the sprinklers.

"The DCA does not believe the vandalism is related to the sprinkler incident based on the report by the public that youths were on the roof," he said.

Police are investigating.
