A FOOLHARDY young man with a fondness for the work of Vittorio De Sica attempted to steal a police bicycle on Saturday.

The brazen attempted theft occurred when two officers from Perth Bicycle Patrol Group were in the Murray Street mall tending to an extremely intoxicated male.

Both officers had dismounted from their bicycles when a man approached and suddenly mounted bicycle 36 issued to Probationary Constable Woodland and began riding down the Mall at speed.

Senior Constable Whitney mounted his bicycle and began a pursuit as stunned pedestrians watched the bicycle chase.

The suspect changed directions a number of times, ignoring Constable Whitney’s calls for him to stop, before leaping from the bicycle and running west down the Mall.

Constable Whitney dismounted and pursued the suspect on foot for several hundred metres before tackling him to the ground.

Police allege the 21-year-old male suspect from Ballajura then admitted he had stolen the bicycle and expressed remorse.

He was taken to Perth Watch House and will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on 12 August.
