Jon BassettEastern Reporter

A SMALL axe, a samurai sword and a baton disguised as a torch are among at least 20 dangerous or deadly weapons seized by police on central Perth streets since December.

Two teenagers were among those charged by police over the past few weeks, with a 13 and 14-year-old allegedly holding the axe while stealing bicycles at Perth train station.

“One young juvenile said he had the axe for protection,” Senior Sergeant Ange Tipping said.

Snr Sgt Tipping said only a small percentage of youth in the city had weapons, and many did not realise it was illegal.

Most of the weapons found by police since December 1 were held by adults or found during searches of cars.

The samurai sword was allegedly found in a car stopped on Newcastle Street being driven by a Balga man (24) on December 23.

Only one of the weapons was used to cause injury, with a 17-year-old girl allegedly using scissors to injure a man (20) in the Perth Cultural Centre on December 13.

Sgt Tipping said anyone who saw someone with a weapon should call police immediately and not intervene.
