BEING legally blind has not stopped Peter Renzullo from making his feature film debut as a director.

The Bassendean resident is about halfway through shooting his first film Anticipation at various locations across Perth, which was inspired by his own background in music production and music video clips.

Anticipation is about Lenny, a musician struggling to make a living and whose attempts at making a bigger name for himself are thwarted by his struggles with social anxiety and fear of crowds.

“I have been a music producer for about 20 years,” he said.

“I wanted to flesh out a story about musicians in Perth; many of them are dealing with anxiety, which seemed to be a common thread.”

Renzullo said he set himself a challenge in doing a movie about the Perth music scene – which predominantly takes place at night.

“About 80 per cent of this movie is shot at night,” he said.

“It has been logistically challenging shooting at night and securing venues, dealing with noise and making sure there is enough lighting,

“But it is the best way to catch the music scene.”

A particular camera has helped him overcome his other challenge of being visually impaired

“It’s a Blackmagic Production Camera, which has focus guides that light up areas of the image bright green when they are in focus,” he said.

“So I am able to work out what’s in focus despite my vision problem.

“As a result, I ask cast members to not wear bright green when they are in a scene.”

Renzullo said once the film was completed, he hoped for it to screen at festivals before release.
