A WOMAN who was asked to cover up while breastfeeding is getting global attention for her response during national Breastfeeding Week from August 1-7.

An image of the American mother who responded to the request by putting a blanket over her own head has gone viral on social media.

The picture of Melanie Dudley feeding her four-month-old son was shared almost 200,000 times and liked by more than 16,000 people within days of it posted online.

Mrs Dudley’s mother-in-law Kitty Yannone posted the image, saying “I love my daughter-in-law so much!!! Someone told her to ‘cover up’ while she was feeding my grandson in a restaurant!!”.

With thousands of people outraged by the request of the male stranger, the image was shared by Kitty’s friend Carol Lockwood who praised the 34-year-old mother’s actions.

“I’ve never met her, but I think she’s AWESOME!!! (Please share! With permission, I’ve made this post public — I’m SO over people shaming women for nursing!!!,” the post read.

The image was posted on last week(July 30) and follows the incident where Natalie Cramp was escorted out of Joondalup Shopping Centre’s parents’ room in July for expressing breast milk for her baby.
