WOMEN are getting a chance to shine behind the bar in a man-free zone on August 6.

Female group Ladies of Liquor and Larder (LOLLA) has teamed up with rookie cocktail competition platform Young Bloods to host its first all female gin cocktail competition at Churchill Bar.

The event is being held to support and encourage women in hospitality and raise funds for the White Ribbon Foundation.

LOLLA co-founding member and bartender Claudia Morgan said women were hesitant to work behind a bar in a male-dominated industry.

“We felt like there was a gap in the industry that wasn’t being addressed,” she said.

“Females in the industry have to deal and handle different things compared our male counterparts and we wanted to build a strong support network and an open space to share thoughts amongst females in the industry.”

Young Bloods founder and Bar Lafayette bartender David Alexander Stucken said there would be no men involved in the competition.

“We will have 12 female competitors and three female judges,” he said.

“Female contender participation sat around 15-20 per cent initially and it’s growing.”

Formed this year, LOLLA already has more than 200 members.
