City centre undergoes bit of a seachange

Sixty tonnes of coral sand has been trucked in along with deck chairs, beach umbrellas, mini huts, paddle pools and games to transform the urban landscape into a retro seaside escape until January 19.

MRA place management executive director Veronica Jeffery said the beach was part of a plan to continually alter the space to encourage people to visit regularly.

‘The urban beach offers a unique and surprising experience in the cultural heart of the city,’ she said.

The installation is a key part of MRA’s summer and Christmas activities in the Perth Cultural Centre, which includes the Illuminites Christmas Festival and Night Markets on Friday, December 13 and a pop-up bar in the Urban Orchard.
