City of Perth could embrace international best practice in accountability and transparency

CITY of Perth council will soon vote on embracing “international best practice” in accountability and transparency in local government.

The City’s Finance and Administration Committee voted last Tuesday to have council take note of a new report – ‘Local Government Accountability and Transparency – Opening the Door to International Best Practice’, and to approve in-principle support for the development of an open government approach “to achieve its goal to be a leader in transparency and accountability”.

This open government approach is to be developed through a review of the City’s Community Strategic Plan and Corporate Business Plan.

The same committee voted to approve a third party contribution to travel to enable a City of Perth officer to participate in the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program later this year.

The Committee recommended councillors accept the third party contribution to travel expenses.

Third party contributions to the travel expenses of Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi were central to her recent State Administrative Tribunal hearing.

The new report, produced by City staff, made reference to changes introduced by the City of Perth Act 2016, which amended the Local Government Act to require local governments to place their gift register and travel disclosures on their web site.
