City of Vincent approves extra rooms for Great Southern Hotel

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

ALMOST 30 rooms will be added to The Great Southern Hotel after approval was granted last week by the City of Vincent.

The room count will increase from 94 to 121 when works are completed at the Robinson Road hotel with “redundant areas” that were “no longer viable”, including the function centre on the ground floor, being transformed into 14 additional rooms with a new dining, entry and lounge area.

On the first floor, the business centre will be converted to nine additional rooms and unused space on the second floor will be turned into four additional rooms.

Two more windows will also be installed on the second floor.

Construction is expected to start next month.

Applicant and architect Michael Dryka said the additional rooms were required to keep up with demand and an industry shift.

“The business room was originally set up when businesses were attracted to the hotel, but now everyone has iPads and iPhones so they usually go to the big hotels,” he said. “The current owners now focus on the tour market.”
