City pushes a two ward future

At a recent council meeting, Vincent Mayor John Carey said a North and South ward model would provide better representation than the one-ward system being promoted by the City of Perth.

‘The worst scenario is one ward,’ he said.

‘I have no doubt in my mind that with one ward it would require significant resources and additional funding (for candidates) to run and reach out to 30,000 voters.’

A report prepared by Mr Carey said the two-ward structure would have about 17,000 voters in the north and 16,000 voters in the south.

He said a one-ward model could lead to factionalism and result in residents having less contact with elected members.
