Since 2010 he has done just that, with his annual event One sugar to go showcasing a cross-section of contemporary culture to raise awareness and about $10,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation so far.
Despite his hardship, Mr Carter said he was glad he could make a difference and support others in similar circumstances.
He was 69 when he died I was living in Melbourne at the time, so I put my life on hold and came back three months before he passed away, Mr Carter said.
The drugs and the chemo changes the person and that was pretty full on.
This years event will be held at the Whipper Snapper distillery in East Perth on June 20 from 7pm.
Entry is $10, with all proceeds going to the Foundation.
There will be an exhibition displaying works by artists from WA and around the world, as well as food and drinks. Previously the artwork featured on coffee cups but Mr Carter said the coffee theme would be translated to canvas for the first time and available for purchase.
