Colin Barnett pledges $750,000 of funds to upgrade sporting clubs

PREMIER Colin Barnett has pledged $750,000 worth of upgrades to inner city sporting clubs this morning, ahead of the March state election.

Mr Barnett said sporting clubs were the “lifeblood” of communities.

Perth MLC Eleni Evangel said it was essential important sporting facilities were maintained.

“It would be a real tragedy to see sporting clubs fall into disrepair,” she said.

“It also vital clubs make the most of night time opportunities, not only for training but also camaraderie in the community.”

Upgrades range from fences and new kitchens through to more expensive jobs such as floodlights, re-surfacing and installing disabled toilets.

The Floreat Athena Soccer Club – $250,000 for its building and floodlights fund as the existing lights are not strong enough for night matches

-The Perth Soccer Club – $150,000 towards playing fields resurfacing

-East Perth Football Club – $100,000 for new air conditioning and upgrades

-The North Perth Tennis Club – $85,000 for new tennis fences and toilets

-The North Perth Bowling Club – $80,000 to refurbish toilets and install a disabled toilet and new kitchen facilities; and

-The Leederville Tennis Club – $85,000 for clubroom and court upgrades
