Council acts to kill City bill

Rosanna CandlerEastern Reporter

The council unanimously voted for Mayor Heather Henderson to immediately write to all Members of Parliament urging them not to support the Bill "due to the forthcoming Lord Mayoral election and the uncertainty of the strategic direction of the City of Perth".

"If the whole point of the Act is to give Perth a chance of being recognised internationally as a capital city, it is completely diminished by the two possible lord mayors before us," Cr Mark Burns said.

About 3000 Subiaco south ward residents would become part of the City of Perth under the bill.

A City spokeswoman said Mrs Henderson sent the letters last Thursday, as Parliament was due to meet on October 13.

The Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) last week found Ms Scaffidi "signally failed" her duties by not disclosing gifts and travel in the financial year ending 2009.

Cr Murray Rowe said he supported the motion because "sometimes opportunity knocks, and we don't want to miss this opportunity".

"We have two people running for lord mayor," Cr Scott Arbuckle said.

"One is young and quite inexperienced (Reece Harley), and the other is under investigation by the CCC. This is an incredibly faulty piece of legislation that serves absolutely no positive outcome.

"It is a fraud, a sham."
