John Giorgi has led the City for 20 years, ever since it came into existence after the City of Perth was split.
No-one sitting on council has that much experience in local government.
And none have experience of amalgamations. Mr Giorgi has that knowledge and understanding.
By not renewing his contract, council is going into an uncertain amalgamation process, with nobody leading the operations.
Recruitment of a chief executive, who may only be at the helm for a couple of months, will be hard. If the council is able to recruit, that person’s ability to have an effect in such a short time frame would be limited.
This decision is only going to make it easier for the State Government to dissolve Vincent and split the governance of its suburbs between any other local governments it may choose.
Council has not provided any information to counter these concerns and this should make residents even more worried.
