Devoted teacher and innovator retires at 72

The much-loved principal and 72-year-old great grandmother came out of retirement for what she says was the best job she ever had.

Ms Lucas first moved into special education in 1972 having taught in mainstream schools since her training in the 60s.

‘It fitted me like a glove,’ she said.

‘And there’s just something about this school. I’ve been the principal of other schools but this one has my heart.’

When she applied 4½ years ago, Ms Lucas thought she would be turned down because of her age.

‘It’s been a dream job for me,’ she said. ‘I’ll miss the kids’
