‘Die-in’ to sound alarm on human extinction

Sarah BrookesEastern Reporter

ENVIRONMENTAL activists will stage a mass ‘die in’ in Perth’s CBD tomorrow in a symbolic move to show how perilously close they believe we are to the sixth mass extinction event in the history of our planet.

The protest, organised by Extinction Rebellion WA, aims to disrupt business as usual along Murray Street as participants lie down and play dead.

An Extinction Rebellion spokesperson said time was running out to take serious action to reduce global pollution and the risks of climate change.

“Unless urgent action is taken now, societal collapse and mass death are seen as inevitable by scientists and many other experts,” the spokesperson said.

“On Saturday we will disrupt business as usual in the Perth CBD using non-violent peaceful action.

“This act of symbolism will be carried out in a peaceful and inclusive manner.

“We invite all to come and be a part of this action, to join us in fighting for the survival of life on earth and share our citizens’ duty to rebel.”

The spokesperson said civil disobedience was the most effective way to bring about social change.

“Extinction Rebellion’s key global demands are governments must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency and act immediately to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
