Caitlin TillerEastern Reporter

DOCTORS Claire Johnson and Angela Ives will "give back" by volunteering for the Cancer Council WA's Daffodil Day this week.

University of WA-based Cancer and Palliative Care Research and Evaluation Unit Fellows Dr Johnson and Dr Ives will run their second stall selling daffodil pins at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital on Friday.

Dr Johnson said volunteering was a good way to give back.

She said the research was important to provide information on how to improve the WA health system.

"We collaborate with a large cross-section of people providing cancer services through different stages of people's cancer journeys because we cannot do this by ourselves," Dr Johnson said.

The research unit is comprised of eight staff, based in Fiona Stanley and Sir Charles Gairdner hospitals.

Dr Johnson and Dr Ives started working together in 2009, a year after the research unit was formed.

"It's been remarkably energising because we both have different ideas to bring forward," Dr Johnson said.

"We don't look down microscopes, we talk to people to understand how the health system works, which is really important."

The Cancer Council hopes to raise $857,000 this year.
