Early works start to ease financial drain on City

Council agreed at its special meeting last week to bring forward the works, which were originally scheduled to start during the 2013/14 financial year.

A report to council said waiting until then would increase the cost of the project considerably.

‘If the drainage upgrade works are to proceed in the 2013/14 financial year, a new traffic management set-up is required to be implemented, and major traffic disruptions will occur when Riverside Drive traffic is diverted and Elizabeth Quay works are in full swing,’ it said.

‘The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA) is already closing parts of Mounts Bay Road, and the intersection of William and The Esplanade, for its works.

‘Since the drainage works will be in this location, the City of Perth is proposing to take advantage of the opportunity to request MRA to implement the project so any traffic congestion is minimised.’

The works are expected to start this month.
