East Perth: boy charged with assault after police officer is seriously injured

POLICE have charged a 16-year-old boy over an incident in which a police officer was seriously injured.

About 7.10pm last night police were called to Wellington Square in East Perth after reports of a disturbance in the area.

Police attended and a group of people was already leaving the area.

A police officer was talking to several people when it is alleged the boy assaulted the officer.

He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries, but has since been released.

A 16-year-old boy from Newman has been charged with assaulting a public officer (prescribed circumstances, juvenile) and breach of a bail undertaking.

He is due to appear in Perth Children’s Court today.
