Garage Sale Trail open for business

NEXT time you consider throwing out that old pair of jeans, you might want to think twice before doing so.

Australias biggest garage sale event the annual Garage Sale Trail is coming up on October 24 with an emphasis on encouraging people everywhere to reuse and recycle.

Waste Authority WA chairman Marcus Geisler said it took 6813 litres of water to grow enough cotton for a single pair of jeans enough to fill a backyard swimming pool.

He said if people resold or recycled 367 pairs of old jeans rather than throwing them out, it would effectively save enough water to fill an Olympic swimming pool.

The Garage Sale Trail is a perfect example (of) how we can actually reuse material and goods instead of putting it into landfill, Mr Geisler said.

Padbury resident Karen Thompson, who is also a qualified earth carer, has been involved with the Garage Sale Trail over a number of years.

She said the day was a great opportunity for communities to come together and save a huge amount of waste.

Its just great for people who have things and they just want to get rid of them, she said.

Lets not just throw it out in landfill, lets make some money out of it and sell it.

Registrations are open for potential garage sale hosts today. Log on to the website for information.
